Introducing Jeff

J.W. Joshua is an accomplished fine artist and instructor with over three decades of experience creating and teaching works grounded in close observation, technical clarity, and disciplined craft. A summa cum laude graduate of San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking, Joshua has been recognized for his artistic excellence, including receiving the Discovery Gold Award for his painting Futility in Progress. His work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions throughout California, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Rental Gallery.

Joshua works across a wide range of media, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, graphite, pastel, and pencil. Rooted in realism, his practice emphasizes the foundational principles of drawing and painting—line, value, composition, and the careful study of light and form. Each piece reflects both technical discipline and thoughtful observation, creating work that invites viewers into a deeper relationship with the subject. Whether creating portraits, landscapes, or figurative studies, Joshua seeks to capture the structural integrity and emotional presence of what he sees.

Teaching has been a central part of Joshua’s artistic life. He has taught drawing, painting, and art history in both classroom and one-on-one settings, helping students develop observational skills, technical confidence, and their own visual language. Joshua believes that learning to see clearly is at the heart of both artistic practice and personal growth.
